Hi Blokes ,
Ive changed internet providers and im notat all sure when the change
will happen .
Im switching to Telstra against my better judgement , but they have
provided an deal that saves me almost $100 a month on out landline phone
, Foxtell and internet.
I asked Telstras sales bloke if thier internet included usenet news
groups ,trying to explain what it was , the possum was totally perplexed
at my question and obviuously didn't have a clue what I was on about.

So my question is do any of you fellas have Telstra as your internet
provider ? do they have access to these groups or do you use an
independant news group reader service.

Thanks in advance.

I cant answer about Tel$tra, but I do have a little experiance with usenet..

If Tel$tra do not provide you with access to usenet, may I suggest a
simple untimed account with Astraweb. They are what Internode use as a
usenet feed (Internode just aliases Astraweb)

http://www.astraweb.com

I have a $10 account which gives you 25 gigabytes of access, untimed.
I've had the same account for probably 6 years, and topped it up once,
as I had to download a movie or two...
They appear to have the full set of groups (last time i looked 37,000 or
so) including all the binary groups.

I use them when im up the bush, as internode do not allow remote
connections to news.internode.on.net

Hope that helps :)

Cheers

Spooky.. just saw this in another newsgroup:
Telstra newsgroups closing.

May 29 2015 they cease to exist.
if you use them and need replacement for text groups, see www.ausics.org,
just give the newsmaster your IP range and he'll add the full cidr
grouping from whois.

I guess reading this, if you're a tel$tra customer, yu'll have free
access to the mob: www.ausics.org ...
Maybe worth taking a look.. I've never heard of 'em.

Cheers..

I use the $10 untimed Astraweb as well. I didn't look too hard when finding
it, it was good enough value and it works well.

I've had a couple of small issues with them, but gee, $10.00? Who cares?
You cant buy a six pack of cans for $10.00, and it lasts until it runs
out. 25 gb of text will last forever! :-D

How you going with rain? You're not far from Rod?

Cheers..

No, I'm 1000km south in Central Western NSW. We have had proper rain this
year after many dry years. I monitor soil moisture and the 1200mm (deepest)
sensor came on range about a month ago is steadily rising. I'm expecting a
full soil water profile for spring this year, but anything can happen.

Glad to hear, and I hope Rod's getting a bit. SE Aus seems to be as wet
as always, contrary to BOM's El-Nino outlook. Seems as wet as it always
is, although summer was drier than the norm.

I dont have stock on my joint, but i'd like a decent amount of water to
fall back on, if we go back to drought. I'm only interested in water to
flush the dunny, have a wash, and fight any fire around my shed and camp.

I'm also happy if the locals, ranging from 'roos, wallabys, emu's,
rabbits etc can get a drink. I couldnt imagine dying of thirst...
That'd hurt :-D. Even the dogs, cats and foxes dont deserve to die of
thirst. At least not until i've had a crack at 'em.... There are other
more suited ways to remove that sort of stuff from the planet.

I dont wanna see the wallabies hurt at all.. they are harmless: dont
wreck fences ect... Water is gold anywhere...

Telstra AFAIK provides no newsgroups these days. I use individual.net at
10 euros ($14.30 at the moment) per year.

Well the Telstra deal was a complete failure ,I waited 15 days to get
the modem,, set it up and never had internet access from day one .
After four or five hours on the phone to some so called tech in the
phillipines ,and phone calls every day for 10 days I decided to tell
Telstra where to go.
I never cancelled my account with my long time provider so I just moved
every thing over to them and have completely given Telstra the flick .
20 days in total with no internet access since signing up with the
bigpond crowd , no interest from them to get my accessfrestored , "we
will do it when we are ready" Unfortunately it was aproblem at the
exchange and no amount of calls could get them to fix the problem quickly .
I must say that he people at Westnet tech support are the nicest and
clueiest I have had the pleasure to deal with .
They had found the problem very quickly but were also hampered by
Telstra's non customer service policy of "well fix it when we are ready"

Other ISP's actually have some leverage with Telstra, once they report the
fault, Telstra can't charge them for the service and for short outages, they
still charge you. In effect, if your local ISP reports enough faults,
Telstra is paying for their tech support through lower billing, win-win as
far as I see it.

You are way better without the big T.

cheers
